Lego Ultra Sonic Raider 71739

 3.5 Stars

I really, really wanted to love this set as the premise itself is pretty cool - one large vehicles that splits off in to four smaller vehicles.  Yeah, I'll go with that sounds cool.  Unfortunately the execution of the idea is not all it should be and left me feeling quite disappointed.  As one large vehicle this is cool and has a lot of play value, the problem comes when you split it into it's individual vehicles.

The bike portion is incapable of standing on it's own so it is fine when you are holding it but as soon as you let go it flops on to it's side.  It uses the Master Wu hat pieces as hubcaps for the large rear wheel and these have a tendency to drop off when the pushed along a hard surface.  I also found the instructions to be moderately confusing for fixing the rear wheel in place - turns out you affix via the centre point but in the book it really does seem to be affixed through an outer attachment point.

The chopper is pretty neat and I did like that as a stand alone.

The two side "tanks" are exceptionally meh and are just reverse builds of each other so nothing unique about them.  Even worse the gun turrets drop off if you look at them woring as it is simply a piece with a little node poking out of it and then a technic pin slotted on to it.  The treads are neat though and I like the idea of putting the rubber dots on the outside of the track as it does help them move smoothly.

One upside is the inclusion of 4 of the Ninjago Heroes and 2 of the seprentine bad guys.  Even better, there is the Golden Zane figure.  The figures themselves are highly detailed with front and back prints and moulded head pieces for the Serpentines.  Really pleased with the quantity of figures included as it really ups the play value of the set and they can easily be incorporated in to other Ninjago builds and play sessions.  The gold figure surprised me as it is more detailed on the prints than I expected so that was a win.

Overall, it is a reasonable set but just needed some further development to make it a great set.  If you are using it as one huge vehicle or displaying it as one vehicle then yeah it is great, just expect to be disappointed by the individual vehicles.
