Duplo Minnie's House & Cafe 10942

I have never picked up a Duplo brick but this set was just so stinking cute I could not resist it.  I was not disappointed in the kit at all - but my review is based off it being used by the intended age range and not by an adult.

The set comes with 2 moulded figures - Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse.  They come as pre-constructed figures with moveable arms and legs and the skirts are contained in a small cradboard box inside one of the plastic bags with the bricks.  Both skirts are elasticated and simply pull over the base of the figure.  These are a nice touch that really elevate the look of the figures (although I suspect they would easily be lost).  Also in this box is a pink and white dotted piece of fabric that you use as a sheet for the bed.

There are two buildings in the set and contruction is standard Lego fare.  I was surprised that it was multiple pieces per step in the booklet.  It is easy to understand off the pictorial images which pieces you need and how to combine them to get the desired result.

The first booklet steps you through building Daisy Duck's bakery which comes with a food mixer, loaves of bread and a couple of cupcakes.  Even better is the pre-printed plate piece which displays a Mickey Mouse shaped waffle.

The second booklet steps you through building Minnie Mouse's house.  This features two levels - downstairs there is a couch with a tufted appearance to the mould.  Upstairs is a sleigh style bed and a little cupboard.  Add a couple of plants, some stools and a watering can and it gives a really cute effect.

The finished pieces look really adorable in their pastel colourways.  Add in some cute accessories and this makes a great playset for little hands.  To be honest, because of the theming and the Disney connection you could likely get away with this set for up 6 years old - I know Duplo is seen as "baby Lego" but this set is beautifully executed and there is no reason I can see why an older child would not really enjoy this as a playset.

One thing I did want to do was compare the Duplo brick with the standard 2 x 4 system brick.  A Duplo brick is twice the height of a System Brick and 4 times the length.  The good news is that you can fit a standard system brick across 2 studs on a Duplo brick.  This means that the Duplo bricks are really versatile as you could incorporate them as a base for alarger structure and just utilise system bricks for the external (and visible) detailing.  This would reduce weight and provide some additional strength.
